These drawings often seem like abstract studies, but they are the result of a lifetime’s study of the energy and rhythm of the natural world. Barns-Graham studied the sea from the cliff tops and coastlines of Cornwall and Fife. Her studio in St Ives looked out on to the sweeping sands of the bay, constantly ribbed and shaped by the tide.
